Inlet port for a valve-timed four-stroke internal combustion engine

A plate (8) can be inserted into the inlet port (1) of an internal combustion engine, through the slot (7) beginning on that side of the inlet port facing the cylinder axis (5), preferably into the annular space (4) arranged around the valve stem (3), by means of which plate the flow cross-section of the inlet port (1) can be adjusted from the full cross-section to a predeterminable minimum size and a swirl in the cylinder thereby adjusted from a low to a high value. The movement of the plate (8) is preferably controlled as a function of the operating state of the internal combustion engine. A greater or lesser part of the cross-section of the inlet port is covered according to how far the flat plate (8) is inserted into the slot (7), thereby producing an increased swirl in the cylinder. When the plate is withdrawn, the air can also flow past on the other side of the valve stem, thereby bringing about a reduced swirl together with an improved through-flow. The increased swirl is therefore advantageously assigned to a partial load of the internal combustion engine (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
