PURPOSE:To secure recognition of handwritten characters even though they are set in the normal or upside-down directions, by delivering again information data stored in a memory to a recognizing means upside down if these characters are not set in the normal direction or plural character candidates are available. CONSTITUTION:Character data handwritten on a tablet 1 undergo input processing through an input process means and then a pre-process means. These processed character data are stored in a memory and recognized by a recognizing means. In case the characters are not set in the normal direction or plural character candidates are available, the character data stored in the memory are delivered again to the recognizing means after undergoing upside-down inverse arithmetic operation.
