PURPOSE:To discriminate the expiration of the service life of a magnetic recording medium in accordance with a reproduced signal level by discriminating the expiration of the service life in a position where a reproduced signal is recorded on the magnetic recording medium when it is detected that the level of the reproduced signal is lower than a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:A signal level comparator 14 compares the reproduced video signal level with a reference level signal supplied from a reference signal generator 15. The level of the reference level signal outputted from the reference level signal generator which supplies the signal to the comparator 14 is changed in accordance with a position signal supplied from a head position detecting circuit 7, and the reference signal having the same level as an optimum reproduced signal level corresponding to the position of a magnetic head 3 is outputted. A system controller 4 judges a current reproduced track to be unusable if the level difference signal outputted from the signal level comparator 14 indicates that the reproduced video signal is >=10dB lower than the reference level signal (in a range B indicated by hatching).
