PURPOSE:To produce a columnar polyolefin widely usable for various composite materials, etc., by only one stage polymerization operation without requiring operation of ash removal, etc., by polymerizing an olefin by the use of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is polymerized usually at <=100 deg.C and at <=50kg/cm<2>.G polymerization pressure by the use of a catalyst comprising a catalytic component obtained by treating a Mg compound (preferably compound obtained by reacting metallic Mg with a halogenated hydrocarbon) with an organic compound (e.g., aliphatic ether, etc.,) shown by formula R<1>OR<2> (R<1> and R<2> are alkyl or aryl) and bringing the treated compound into contact with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid diester (e.g., dimethyl phthalate, ethylpropyl phthalate, etc.,) and a Ti halide (e.g., CiCl4, TiI4, etc.,).
