PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration of the 2nd protective layer and recording layer by the gaseous components possessed by a substrate by forming a thin film layer of a metal and 2nd protective layer between the 1st magnetic and the recording layer. CONSTITUTION:This photomagnetic recording medium is constituted by forming the 1st protective layer 6 consisting of a dielectric material, the thin film layer 7 consisting of the metal, the 2nd protective layer 8 consisting of the dielectric material, the recording layer 9 consisting of an amorphous alloy magnetic material having the axis of easy magnetization in the direction perpendicular to the film plane and the 3rd protective layer 10 consisting of a metal or dielectric material in this order or the substrate 5. A material having a getter effect to easily take in the gaseous components is selected as the thin metallic film has the effect of absorbing the gaseous components taken in by the 1st protective layer 6 from the substrate 5, the deterioration of the 2nd protective layer 8 and the recording layer 9 by the gaseous components is prevented and the magnetooptic characteristics are improved.
