PURPOSE:To attain the synthetic recording and edition of a video signal by converting an n-sheet video signal to be synthesized into a digital video signal, compressing the amplitude component into 1/n, adding the result and storing it into a memory circuit. CONSTITUTION:The 1st picture formed by an optical system 6 is converted into an electric signal by an image pickup element 7 and fetched into a memory circuit 21 via a changeover switch 23 and an amplitude compression circuit 18 as a digital video signal. Then the digital video signal of the 2nd picture formed by the optical system 6 is subjected to 1/2 amplitude component compression by the circuit 18 and the result is inputted to an adder 19. Simultaneously, a signal from the memory 21 is compressed into 1/2 by an amplitude compression circuit 20 and inputted to the adder 19. The added video signal is fetched in the memory 21. The signal read from the memory 21 is recorded on the magnetic disk 1 by using a magnetic head 2 to record the synthesized video signal. Further, the video signal of the recording track to be moved is stored in the memory circuit and read from the memory circuit and moved to a desired track.
