A flexible ground cover structure comprises an upwardly open mesh (2) made from a self-supporting material having a vertical cell height of at least 10 cm and having eyelets or openings for receiving fixing elements (3). The cells of the mesh are filled with soil, gravel, stones or other filler material (4) and the mesh is covered with a layer of top soil or other covering layer (5).
