PURPOSE:To reduce the number of signals for driving a liquid crystal display device and to reduce the size of an LSI and the cost of the device by providing the device with a common signal generating means for generating at least four kinds of common signals and a segment signal generating means for generating at least eleven kinds of segment signals and setting up the Von/Vof ratio of an effective value to 1.7 or more. CONSTITUTION:The device is constituted of a clock generator 11, a divider 2, a ring counter 3, a common driver 4 for forming at least four kinds of common waveforms H1-H4, a ROM5 to be the segment signal generating means consisting of a data address decoder 5-a and a main ROM5-b to generate at least eleven kinds of segment signals, and a segment driver 7. A counter 3 is connected to the driver 4 through a T.FF8 and then connected to a segment shift register/latch 6 through an EX-OR9. The ROM5 is connected to the latch 6 through the EX-OR9. Since the Von/Vof ratio of the effective value is set up to 1.7 or more and the device is driven by a single power supply, a boosting circuit or the like can be omitted and the size of the LSI or the like can be reduced.
