PURPOSE:To remove the idle transportation time loss of a scanning optical system by switching the waiting position of the scanning optical system at the selection of a manual setting mode, scanning an original to detect the original size in a forward process, and in a backward process, executing scanning to read out the original. CONSTITUTION:When the detection of the original size is selected by an operator in the manual setting mode, the waiting position of the scanning optical system 12 is temporarily turned to a reference waiting position, e.g. from the left end position to the right end position in the scanning direction, at the non- detection of the original size in the manual setting mode or in an automatic transportation mode. The right end position is set up as a reference point, scanning for original size detection is executed in the forward process and scanning for original reading is executed in the backward process. Thereby, the idle transportation time loss of the scanning optical system can be removed.
