PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of buckling and breakdown in reinforcing fibers by using a molding tool consisting of upper and lower die members and end members having specific structure in the stage of putting a composite raw material formed by compounding the reinforcing fibers into a metallic matrix into the molding tool and subjecting the material to hot hydrostatic molding. CONSTITUTION:The raw material stock 5 consisting of a powdery metal and fibers is packed into molding recessed surfaces 3a, 3b of the upper and lower die members 1a, 1b in such a manner that the fibers are directed toward an arrow A in the stage of producing the composite member consisting of the metallic matrix and reinforcing fibers by the hot hydrostatic molding. The ends of the members 1a, 1b are then inserted into recesses 4a, 4b of the end members 2a, 2b to assemble the tool. Such toll is put into an easily deformable capsule made of a thin metallic sheet and a heat resistant pressure medium such as ceramic powder is put between the capsule and the assembled tool. The assembly is then loaded into a hot hydrostatic molding device and is sintered by heating and pressurizing with an inert gas. The members 1a, 1b are made movable upward and downward and the members 2a, 2b are made immovable, by which the exertion of the pressure in the longitudinal direction of the fibers in the sintering stock is prevented and the buckling and breaking of the reinforcing fibers during the heating and pressurizing are prevented.
