PURPOSE:To form a picture image display device excellent from view of every point like thin form, high brightness and mass productivity, by forming an intermediate electrode or a cathode electrode with matrix-like picture element electrodes corresponding to the array of dot-shaped phosphor on a panel. CONSTITUTION:Electrons heated by a heater electrode 1 into a state close to excitation and staying on a cathode electrode 2 can be emitted in form of electron beams 61 to 63 by being subjected to application of a signal voltage. then, these beams undergo the effect of focusing action caused by the electric field of an intermediate electrode 3 and pass through piercing holes 31. Thereafter, these beams direct their way toward phosphor 5 to which a high voltage is applied and arrive in acceleration at a desired position to make the phosphor 5 luminous. Meanwhile, the electron beams 61 to 63 correspond to blue B, green G and red R respectively, and the intermediate electrode 3 makes action of color section for the phosphor 5 simultaneously with its focusing action for electron beams.
