PURPOSE:To obtain an alicyclic epoxy resin low in a content of acidic substance and excellent in heat resistance, water resistance and weathering resistance, by washing an epoxy compound obtained by reacting a specified unsaturated compound with peracetic acid with an aqueous alkali solution. CONSTITUTION:4-Vinylcylohexene-1-oxide is polymerized by ring opening at -70-200 deg.C in the presence of an active hydrogen organic compound as an initiator and a catalyst (e.g., methylamine) to obtain an unsaturated compound of formula I (wherein R1 is an organic compound residue having 1 active hydrogen n<1>, n<2>, ... n<1> are each 0 or 1-100, their sum is 1-100, l is 1-100 and A is a vinyl group-containing cyclohexane skeleton). An epoxy compound having at least one group of formula VIII, represented by formula III [wherein B is a cyclohexane skeleton having a substituent of formula IV, X is a group of any one for formulas V-VII and R2 is (carbo)alkyl or carboaryl] and prepared by reacting the above unsaturated compound with 0.6-1.5mol, per mol of the compound, peracetic acid at 0-70 deg.C is washed with an aqueous alkali solution once to five times.
