PURPOSE:To detect a position without requiring a scale, by deriving a correlation of an original binarization pattern signal, and a signal which has shifted by a prescribed bit, a binarization pattern signal which is obtained after said original binarization pattern signal has been obtained. CONSTITUTION:Each object 1a, 1b and 1c is brought to an image pickup by an image sensor 3 at a prescribe time. As a result, a signal corresponding to an optical intensity which has been photodetected from an image sensor 3 is outputted and sent to a pattern storage part 4. That is a binarization pattern signal Q by which a part corresponding to each object 1a, 1b and 1c becomes a high level is obtained. In this state, in a correlation deciding means 5, a correlation to the original binarization pattern signal Q is decided by receiving an output signal of the image sensor 3 which has executed an image pickup of the objects 1a, 1b and 1c which have moved after the original binarization pattern signal Q has been obtained.
