PURPOSE:To suppress engine noise so as to reduce the quantity of nitrogen oxide in exhaust gas by providing both an adjusting valve for changing the effective area in the hole of a fuel injection nozzle and an actuator for shifting said adjusting valve. CONSTITUTION:Pressurized fuel is supplied to a fuel injection nozzle 8 so as to inject fuel from the hole 38 of a nozzle 8. An adjusting valve 10 changes the effective area in the hole 38. A microcomputer 5 controls an actuator 25 for shifting said adjusting valve 10. The supply quantity of fuel at the initial injection is throttled by the actuator 25 and the adjusting valve 10. Therefore, it is possible to suppress engine noise so as to reduce the quantity of nitrogen oxide in exhaust gas.
