PURPOSE:To stabilize molten metal surface in a mold and to improve quality of casting slab by modifying a controlling parameter according to the slab drawing speed detected and actual nozzle flowing characteristics calculated by measured molten metal surface level and nozzle opening degree. CONSTITUTION:The molten metal surface level in the mold is detected by a level detector 5 and its signal (l) is inputted to a level controlling apparatus 7, by which calculates a deviation between its actual value and an aimed value B. In the other side, a position of stopper 3, and its position signal (x) is inputted to a hydraulic apparatus 9 and calculates a correcting value of the nozzle opening degree by using the controlling parameter, which is preset by its signal together with an output signal from the level controlling apparatus 7, to output a modifying signal of the nozzle opening degree. Further, the position signal (x) is inputted to an automatic gain correcting computing element 8 and also a signal (v) of a speed detector 15, which detects number of revolutions of a motor 13 for slab drawing, is inputted to the correcting computing element 8. A proportion gain Pc calculated by the computing element 8 is inputted to the level controlling apparatus 7 and the proportion gain of the set controlling parameter is modified repeatedly.
