NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (the substitution position of the maleimide is in the 3- or 4-position based on the ether linkage). EXAMPLE:The compound of formula II. USE:A starting substance for polymaleimide resin and polyamine-modified polymaleimide resin of high heat resistance and high flexibility. It is used as a component of resins which are required specific performance and functions as insulation materials in electronics, heat-resistant adhesive and basic material for aerospace industry. PREPARATION:The condensation reaction between a diamine bearing an ether bond of formula III (the positions of the amino groups is in the 3- or 4-positions form the ether linkage) and maleic anhydride is conducted in an organic solvent such as acetone to form an intermediate of bismalemidic acid of formula IV. Then, in the same solvent, acetic anhydride is used as a dehydration agent in the presence of a base such as triethylamine and a catalyst such as magnesium oxide and cobalt (II) acetate to effect dehydrative cyclization reaction at 20-80 deg.C for 0.5-9hr to give the component of formula I.
