PURPOSE:Aniline is dialkylated with ethyl chloride in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid acceptor to give the titled compound, in high yield, which is used as a coupling component for monoazo dyes. CONSTITUTION:Dialkylation of aniline of formula I (X is H, lower alkoxy; R is lower alkyl) is carried out using ethyl chloride as an alkylating agent in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid acceptor such as magnesium or calcium oxide or hidroxide to give an N,N-diethylaniline of formula II. The reaction is effected by charging the starting substances, the acid acceptor and the aqueous medium simultaneously and heating the mixture at 80-150 deg.C batchwise under pressure in a tightly sealed system. The reaction satisfactorily proceeds without catalyst and the hydrolysis of ethyl chloride and of acylamine group in the aniline can be inhibited whereby the objective compound of high purity is given in high yield.
