PURPOSE:To provide an easily producible cockroach repellent having excellent drug activity and durability compared with a known repellent consisting of a mixture of camphor and an alcoholic or aqueous extract of Swertia japonica, by using an ether extract of Swertia japonica known as a stomachic as an active component. CONSTITUTION:A cockroach repellent can be produced by using an ether extract of Swertia japonica as an active component. Ether is preferably dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, dipropyl ether, etc. The ether extract can be used as it is as a cockroach repellent, however, it may be used in a state adsorbed, mixed or dispersed in a proper carrier. Cockroach can be repelled from a definite zone and the damage by cockroach can be effectively prevented by spraying, scattering or coating the agent to a living place or path of cockroach. There is no restriction in the application place because the agent is safe to human body and has faint smell. It can be easily produced on an industrial scale.
