PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for light stabilizers of high polymer materials, madicines, etc., in high yield and purity, by reacting an acetone with acetonin in the presence of a readily available metal acetate industrially produced at a low cost as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Acetone or an acidic condensate thereof, e.g. diacetone alcohol, etc., is reacted with acetonin (=2,2,4,4,6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine) in the presence of at least one or more metal acetates selected from Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Cd, Ba, Hg and Pb, e.g, magnesium acetate.tetrahydrate, etc., in an amount of preferably 0.01-0.2mol based on 1mol acetone at 50-60 deg.C under ordinary or higher pressure for 0.5-10hr to afford the aimed compound (called triacetonamine). EFFECT:The reaction time is shortened and treatment of isolation is remarkably facilitated.
