A device for readings in a contaminated or soiled area, especially where there is an environment or elements or dusts that are radioactive, toxic or dirty, comprises a writing and drawing backing assembly enclosed inside a generally flat and flexible envelope 1 which is sufficiently airtight to protect the said assembly from any soiling or contamination, the said assembly being sensitive to pressure variations caused by the use of a marking means on or against at least one of the faces of the said envelope, in such a way that a visible trace of the writing or drawing made with the aid of the marking means on or against the said face of the envelope is left on an internal sheet 2 forming part of the said writing and drawing backing assembly. The writing and drawing backing assembly may include a piece of carbon paper 3 placed against the said internal sheet, between the latter and the said face of the envelope 1, and optionally a sheet of card 5 placed behind the said internal sheet 2 so that readings may be inscribed on it by hand without its being necessary to place the envelope against a firm surface.
