PURPOSE:To obtain a strong, durable and reliable instrument by so arranging a light shielding plate that the quantity of a projected light is changed in accordance with a change in body diameter and conducting the judgment processing of the body diameter from an output corresponding to the quantity of the projected light and the memory of a sample hold circuit. CONSTITUTION:A light shielding plate 10 is disposed between a projector 13 and a photoelectric transducer element 15 that receives the light from the projector 13 and transduces the light to electric signals 20 that the plate 10 is displaced in accordance with a change in body diameter of a bottle 1 to change the quantity of the light projected from the projector 13 onto the element 15. When the quantity of the light shielded by the light shielding plate 10 has a prescribed rate before the inspection of the bottle 1, the output of the element 15 is stored in a sample hold circuit. In the inspection, the judgment processing of the body diameter of the bottle 1 is conducted by a required circuit from the output of the element 15 in the position of the light shielding plate 10 in accordance with the change in the drum diameter of the bottle 1 and the value stored in the sample hold circuit.
