PURPOSE:To record a continuous load-elongation curve without an over-lapping record and the like even when extensometers are changed over to conduct a test by recording the difference in the outputs of both detectors in changeover and thereafter conducting a processing after adding the difference to the output of a detector with a low sensitivity. CONSTITUTION:A test piece 7 is held by the upper and lower clamps 3 and 5 mounted to the cross head 2 and the table 4 of a material testing instrument 1, respectively. Elongation detectors(extensometers) 10 and 11 with high and low sensitivities, respectively, are mounted to the test piece 7. The extensometers 10 and 11 are connected with a data processor 20 via elongation amplifiers 12 and 13, respectively, through a changeover switch 18. The processor 20 is connected to a recorder 21. The electric signals from the load detector 8 of the head 2 and from the extensometers 10 and 11 are processed by the processor 20 and a load-elongation curve is drawn by the recorder 21. At this time, first the extensometer 10 is used and its output values are data- processed (20) and stored. Then, when the extensometer is changed over to 11 and its output values are processed and stored, the difference between the outputs of the extensometers 10 and 11 is recorded and thereafter added to the output values of the extensometers 11 to be processed and stored.
