The variable compression ratio is obtained by raising and lowering the crankshaft. This occurs due to the fact that the crankshaft is eccentrically supported in the engine block by means of eccentric bushes or eccentric rings arranged between blind bore and bushes, which rings are fixed to one another and rotated together by way of an adjusting mechanism. The common rotation of the eccentrics results in an enlargement or reduction of the combustion space, depending on the direction of rotation, and hence a reduction or increase of the compression ratio.
