The production of a surface covering for a gear shift or selector lever of a motor vehicle gearbox is simplified and its durability improved in that a shell of thermoplastic material, provided on its inside with projecting means of centring, is injection moulded onto a material blank of leather, plastic or similar film-like material in a two-part injection moulding die utilising the injection pressure to produce the embossed pattern, and that the gear shift or selector lever knob or the core of the gear shift or selector lever knob, which is manufactured from a plastic material or wood or similar material, is at the same time provided with counter-recesses corresponding to the means of centring of the top covering. <IMAGE>
