1,174,666. Polymerizing butadiene. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 10 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 11465/67. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst composition is formed by mixing (a) molybdenum pentachloride, (b) lithium aluminium hydride or one or more organometallic compounds of the formula R m AlCl n , LiAlH x (R 4-x ), or R y M where R is a saturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic radical, or combination thereof, M is lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, zinc, beryllium, magnesium, cadmium, aluminium, gallium or indium, m and n are 1 or 2, the sum of m + n is 3, is 0 or 1, 2 or 3, and y is an integer equal to the valency of the metal M, and (c) is metallic N 1 , or a nickel compound reducible by (b). The ratio of component (c) to component (b) is in the range of 0À25 to 6 gm. atoms of nickel per gm. mol. of lithium aluminium hydride or organometallic compound, and the mol. ratio of component (a) to component (b) being in the range 0À1:1 1 to 25 : 1. The metallic nickel or nickel compound may be supported. The Specification contains lists of organometallic compounds and nickel compounds of which triethylaluminium and nickel stearate are respectively exemplified. Compounds (b) and (c) may be pre-reacted and aged prior to the addition of (a). The catalyst is used to polymerize butadiene-1,3, preferably in a hydrocarbon diluent. Polybutadiene after recovery may be conventionally vulcanized.
|
