A process for making a combustible gas mixture containing H2 and one or more hydrocarbons comprises passing one or more hydrocarbons to a first catalytic cracking zone to which steam or oxygen or air is supplied, and passing the reaction products to a second catalyst zone to which is delivered one or more hydrocarbons and steam or oxygen or air. One or both zones is externally heated if oxygen or air is not being supplied to it.
