PURPOSE:To improve a character recognition rate by comparing the distance between an input character feature quantity and a standard character feature quantity with various prescribed threshold values and selecting the final recognized character. CONSTITUTION:A processor 30 reads the input character feature quantity out of an original image memory 50 according to the program in a program ROM 40 and calculates the distance from the standard character feature quantity from a dictionary memory 70. Then the processor 30 compares the distance with the 1st rejection threshold values TH1 from a RAM 60 to reject characters of TH1<D and regard other characters as the 1st candidate group. Further, the 1st candidate group is compared similarly with a threshold value TH2 smaller than the threshold value TH1 to use a character group of TH2>D, thereby selecting the recognized character of the shortest distance D. When the 2nd candidate group is absent, the distance difference D2-D1 between the 1st and the 2nd candidates which are selected in distance increasing order is compared with the 3rd threshold value TH3 and when D2-D1>TH3, the 1st candidate of the distance D1 is selected as the recognized character. Thus, a rejection rate and a misrecognition rate are decreased and the character recognition rate is improved.
