PURPOSE:To eliminate a stage of operation for removing a light transmitting substrate, to shorten the time for preparation, and to obtain an optical filter having uniform optical characteristics without impairing the surface, by forming integrally an optical filter using a polymer film substrate. CONSTITUTION:A coupling agent is admixed with cholesteric liquid crystals consisting of a mixture of cholesteric liquid crystals and a photopolymerizable monomer. The cholesteric liquid crystals are inserted between two light transmitting polymer film substrates, and photopolymerized after causing planar orientation. Thus, an optical filter comprising two polymer film substrates and a solid polymer film having cholesteric liquid crystal structure formed integrally is obtd. The liquid crystal material to be used is a polypeptide compd., pref. poly(acidic aminoacid) deriv. or poly(acidic aminoacid ester) deriv. Suitable coupling agent is an epoxy acrylate compd., for example, glycidyl acrylate, etc.
