PURPOSE:To attain the electronic edition of a tape with high accuracy by recording plural discrimination data comprising a mode and a display data whose display content differs from the value of the mode data on the same slanted track while the display content is made different. CONSTITUTION:The change point of a rectangular wave signal SC formed by applying a pulse PG representing the absolute rotational phase to rotary heads HA, HB is detected by a change point detection circuit 71 and an area signal M2 is generated from the detection signal SD. In reading or erasing the discrimination word data at recording or reproduction, a signal from an OR gate 87 is written on a track at the post-amble section designated by the signal M2. The discrimination word data consists of the mode data and the display data whose display content differs from the mode data and plural discrimination data having different mode data are recorded. Thus, the electronic edition of a tape with high accuracy and the quick access of the recorded information signal are enabled.
