PURPOSE:To form an electrochromic element capable of executing display with high response speed, high color density, and high quality by patterning finely an oxidative color developing layer in such manner that the transmittance of the whole element is apparently >=70% for visible rays. CONSTITUTION:An oxidative color developing layer is patterned finely so as to obtain >=70% apparent light transmittance of the whole element for visible rays. The term 'patterned finely' means that the oxidative color developing layer is distributed with fine breadth or in fine area with a pattern such as stripe or dot-shape pattern, etc. By this constitution, the transmittance for light is increased in the uncolored state but reduced in the colored state, increasing thus the color density. Thus, a display element having high quality is obtd.
