PURPOSE:To realize continuous measurement of powder layer thickness by detecting mold powder part by level difference between both level detectors of gamma-ray type and eddy-current type for measuring molten metal surface and calculating the powder layer thickness by expressing the detected value the terms of powder thickness. CONSTITUTION:The surface level of the molten steel 3 poured into the mold 2 from tundish 1 is measured at the same time by using the gamma-ray type level detector arranged gamma-ray source 6 and scintillator 5 at opposite side of the mold for each and the eddy-current type level detector 7. A computer 12 detects the mold powder 4 part on the molten steel 3 by the level difference of both level detectors and expresses this detective value in terms of mold powder 4 thickness, based on the ratio of gamma-ray absorption coefficient between the molten steel 3 and the powder 4, and thus, the layer thickness of the molten powder 4 is calculated. In this way, the mold powder layer thickness is continuously measured.
