PURPOSE:To improve the resolution of an image without deteriorating an SN ratio by limiting the amplitude of a contour signal formed from an original signal to extract a noise component and subtracting the noise component from the original signal to which the outline signal is superposed to synthesize signals. CONSTITUTION:A signal adder 5 constitutes a transversal filter together with delay circuits 2, 3 and an outline signal SaP is formed by additionally synthesizing an input signal Sin, a multiplied output signal Sb and a 2tau delay output signal Sc supplied via the circuit 3. The signal Sap is supplied to a signal adder 6 and additionally synthesized with a delay output signal Sa obtained by delaying the signal Sin by 2tau delay value in the circuit 2 to use the synthesized signal for general contour compensation. The signal Sap is supplied to a limiter 8, which suppresses the large amplitude component of the signal Sap, extracts the small amplitude component Sn and supplies the extracted component Sn to a signal adder 10. The adder 10 subtractively synthesizes the synthesized output signal Sd through the adder 6 and the signal Sn. The synthesized output signal Se obtained through the adder 10 is a component emphasizing the large amplitude component.
