PURPOSE:To easily obtain a beam splitter which matches with various desired specifications by forming thin film layers which has different refractive indexes from respective thin layers of a multilayered interference thin film layer between the multilayered interference thin film layer and a transparent base. CONSTITUTION:Thin films 4H and 4L having large and small different refractive indexes are laminated to form the multilayered interference thin film layer 3 between transparent based 2a and 2b having a necessary refractive index to obtain a beam splitter 1 which performs polarizing operation. The tin film layers 5a and 5b which have different refractive indexes from the thin films 4H and 4L of the multilayered interference thin film layer 3 are formed between the multilayered interference thin film layer 3 and transparent bodies 2a and 2b. Thus, the refractive indexes of the thin film layers 5a and 5b are varied while the prisms 2a and 2b and multilayered interference thin film layer 3 are equalized in refractive index, and consequently transmissivity (reflection factor) and P polarized components and S polarized components that transmitted light T and reflected light S contain respectively are easily set.
