PURPOSE:To prevent the accumulation of high-boiling paraffin in a solvent, by a process comprising liquefying a coal-solvent slurry and hydrogenating a part of the liquid material thus obtained and recycling the hydrogenated liquid material for use as a solvent wherein a particular catalyst is used in the step of hydrogenating a solvent. CONSTITUTION:Finely divided coal is mixed with a solvent to form a slurry. The slurry is hydrogenated at a high temp. under a high pressure to liquefy the coal, thereby obtaining a liquefied coal oil. A part of the liquid material produced in the step of liquefying coal is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst comprising a carrier composed of alumina contg. mordenite zeolite which was ion-exchanged with calcium ions and (or) silica alumina and, supported thereon, molybdenum and (or) tungsten and nickel and (or) cobalt. The hydrogenation product was recycled for use as a solvent in the step of coal liquefaction. Thus, the hydrogenation of the solvent and decomposition of the high-boiling paraffin proceed efficiently, which contributes to an improvement in the yield of a liquefied coal oil.
