PURPOSE:To easily and smoothly change the direction of a metallic belt-like body without contact therewith by applying the shifting magnetic field along the longitudinal direction of the belt-like body to said body on the inlet or outlet side of a device which changes the pass direction of the metallic belt-like body to be passed while floating and supporting the same. CONSTITUTION:A floater 14 is disposed in such a manner that the pressure receiving surface 14a thereof faces the metallic belt-like body 1a which is continuously and zigzag passed in a bright annealing furnace 20. Gas is ejected from a slot 19 between the belt-like body and pressure receiving surface and the pass direction is changed while the belt-like body 1a is floated and supported by the gaseous pressure thereof. Linear motors 15a, 15b consisting of linear motors 10 disposed on both sides of the belt-like body 1a are disposed on at least either of the inlet or outlet side of a gas floating and supporting device constituted in the above-mentioned manner. Then the linear motor 15a generates the shifting magnetic field in the running direction and the linear motor 15b generates the same in the opposite direction along the longitudinal direction of the belt-like body 1a, by which the tension in a loop L part is decreased and the traveling direction is easily changed.
