PURPOSE:To efficiently produce desired substances by applying voltage to an ion exchange membrane fitted with an electrode and bringing starting material into contact with the electrode in a vapor phase so as to change chemically the starting material. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder of a small diameter is inserted into the upper opening of a bottomed cylindrical vessel and lowered in the vessel. This vessel is used as a reactor. A cation exchange membrane 1 of sulfonic acid type resin having perfluorocarbon groups is fitted with an electrode 2 of Pt, Ag, Ni or the like and stretched under the cylinder in the vertical direction. Methanol is circulated in a vapor phase through the cylinder with a pump 3 so that it is brought into contact with the membrane 1. Methylal and methyl formate are produced from the methanol. |
