PURPOSE:To produce an Hf base body having good corrosion resistance in high-temp. water by forming an oxygen deficiency type oxide film on the surface of an Hf base body material then implanting specific elements except nitrogen and oxygen into the film. CONSTITUTION:The Hf base body material is heated for 1sec-1hr at 500-1,000 deg.C in an atmosphere of 1X10<-3>-1X10<4>mmHg oxygen partial pressure by using an autoclave to form the oxygen deficiency type oxide film having <=0.1mm thickness. The Hf base body material may be either of Hf base alloy or metallic Hf and the metallic Hf contg. >=90wt% Hf and consisting of the balance inevitable impurities is usable. The elements of 1-2 kinds among group Va, Vb, VIa, VIb, VIIa, VIIb elements except nitrogen and oxygen are injected into the oxygen deficiency type oxide film. The content of these elements is specified to about 0.1-50%, more preferably about 3-20%. The corrosion resistant Hf base body usable for a control rod for a nuclear reactor, etc., is thus obtd.
