PURPOSE:To considerably improve the machining performance by coating the surface of a conventional sintered hard WC alloy or TiCN-base cermet as a base material with Ti carbonitride or nitride by chemical vapor deposition with an org. CN compound so as to provide crystallizability to the resulting film. CONSTITUTION:A sintered hard alloy consisting of a hard phase of one or more kinds of compounds selected among the carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of the group IVa, Va and VIa elements in the periodic table and a binding phase of one or more among Fe, Ni, Co, W, Mo and Cr is used as a base material. The surface of the alloy is coated with Ti nitride and/or carbonitride by chemical vapor deposition to 0.5-10mum thickness so that the half-width of the (200) face of the resulting film is regulated to 0.2-0.4 when measured by X-ray diffraction.
