PURPOSE:To detect a broken article by forming an aperture of the size at which the article cannot pass to a conveying path and detecting the splinters dropping from the aperture. CONSTITUTION:A chute 2 is constructed to a U-shaped section having side plates 2a, 2b for guiding and is installed by inclining the same in the longitudinal direction and tilting the chute in the transverse direction. The rectangular aperture 5 is formed in the mid-part of the chute 2 to the lower side plate 2a. Since the width of the aperture 5 in the height direction is smaller than the height of a green compact 4, the green compact 4 cannot pass the aperture. The splinters of the green compact glide downward together with the green compact 4 on the chute 2 and fall from the aperture 5 when the green compact is broken in a compaction stage. The splinters jump into a hopper 8 and pass a cylindrical part 9. The light from a light emitting part 10 is shielded by the splinters in this stage and is detected as a change of an electric signal in a photodetecting part 11. The signal is transmitted to an alarm mechanism by which an alarm is emitted. The generation of breakage is known by listening to the alarm. The possibility of a malfunction is eliminated if the sensitivity is preliminarily adjusted in such a manner that the alarm mechanism does not react with the powder broken to certain extent.
