Composite metal elements comprise two parallel plates 1, 2 which are each laser-welded to an inner, corrugated reinforcing plate 3 which is arranged in a sandwich-like manner. All the welds 6a, 6b are typically arranged in the same direction. Firstly, continuous laser welds 6b are formed along and through the wave troughs 5 of the corrugated plate and into (or if appropriate through) a lower plate 2, and, secondly, welds 6a are formed along and through the upper plate 1 and into or through the wave crests 4 on the corrugated plate 3. Such an element can be used easily in large metal constructions, especially ships. <IMAGE>
