PURPOSE:To improve the wear resistance of the titled magnetic recording body by providing a protective film consisting of a ceramic having a specified composition on the surface of a magnetic substance layer. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording body consists of a substrate 1, substrate layers 2 on both surfaces of the substrate 1, magnetic substance layers 3 consisting of a Co-Cr alloy, etc., on the layers 2, and protective films 4 on the layers 3. The film 4 is formed with a ceramic of Si6-xAlxOxN8-x, where x=0.1-4.2. The ceramic has excellent wear resistance as compared with C or SiO2, the friction coefficient is small, the film 4 can be formed by sputtering, etc., and a durable magnetic recording medium having excellent wear resistance and long life can be obtained by this constitution.
