PURPOSE:To enable continuous monitoring of corrosion state of the entire internal wall surface of a pig iron tapping trough during the operating of the pig iron tapping trough, by burying a wire type cable sensor into the pig iron trough. CONSTITUTION:A square wave pulse generated by a pulse generator 22 enters a cable sensor 10 via sampling unit 18, a switch 16 and a cable 12 when the switch 16 is at the cable 12 position, and further a cable 14 after reaching the other end of the sensor. At the end (a fixed contact of the switch 16) of the cable 14, the pulse is reflected to reverse the course. As a result, when a potential at a feeding end is observed with oscilloscope 24, a reflected wave arrives from the end of the cable 14 and a combined wave with the transmitted wave is observed. When the transmitted wave vanishes, the reflected wave alone is observed and it also vanishes in turn. Where as corrosion progresses at parts (a), (b), (c) and (d) of the iron pig tapping trough 20 to reduce the space between the molten steel and the cable sensor and the temperature of the cable sensor rises locally, a reflected wave appears at these parts as shown by Ca, Cb, Cc and Cd of a curve.
