For separating gas mixtures, in particular air, using molecular sieves, a gas compressor (1) is frictionally coupled to an expansion turbine (9) which is run by the pressure medium leaving the molecular sieve (5) and heated by a heat exchanger (8), so that part of the drive energy for the compressor (1) can be saved. For desorbing the oxygen from the oxygen-retaining molecular sieve (5), the latter is heated, the exit gases from a combustion carried out in the heat exchanger (8) being utilised for this purpose. To heat the oxygen- retaining molecular sieve (5), a gas stream is first circulated by a fan (30) via the heat exchanger (27), whereupon, after the required desorption temperature for the oxygen-retaining molecular sieve (5) has been reached, pure oxygen is taken off and can be stored or discharged, for example as compressed oxygen after compression by an oxygen compressor (41).

|
