摘要 PURPOSE:To precisely and efficiently recognize a bar code by employing an image sensor which has a high picture element density and the resolution enough to recognize the thinnest width of a bar code and adding output signals from the adjacent plural picture elements of the image sensor by the prescribed number of picture elements for recognizing a character. CONSTITUTION:The output of the image sensor 4 is trnasmitted to a character identify ing circuit 6 through a resolution converting circuit 5 as a pattern with the resolution for recognizing a character, while the output of the image sensor 4 is transmitted to a bar code identifying circuit 7 as a pattern with the resolution for recognizing a bar code. The decided results of respective identifying circuits are transmitted to a selection circuit 8, and a correct one turns out to be final output. If the image sensor is of one-dimensional array, its prerequisite is that the resolution of the sensor itself suffices for identifying a bar code. In order to convert the resolution far a bar code into the resolution for identifying a character, data of four picture elements is added to assume the result to be data of one picture element, where the resolution required for identifying a character is a quater of the resolution for a bar code. Where the total picture elements of the image sensor is (n), data used for identifying a charac ter is equivalently as follows: k=n/4.
