PURPOSE:To shorten the layout and working times of manufacture of a rotary polygo nal mirror used in a laser scanning system optical device or the like, by simultaneously machining a plurality of opposed surfaces of the rotary polygon mirror with the use of a cutting tool arranged symmetrically with the workpiece gripping axis. CONSTITUTION:When spindles 6a, 6b are rotated at a predetermined rotational speed after a rotary polygonal mirror (workpiece) 1 being gripped by an indexing device 2 to be positioned, spindle shift tables 8a, 8b are advanced to cutting positions by means of drive devices 9a, 9b, and therefore, the space between cutting tools 5a, 5b are set to be equal to a predetermined finished distance between opposed surfaces of the rotary polygonal mirror. The workpiece 1 is advanced in association with the movement of a shift table which is driven by a drive device 4 so that both opposed surfaces of the polygon mirror are simultaneously machined. When one machining step is completed, both spindles 6a, 6b and the workpiece 1 are retracted while the indexing device 2 are operated to index the next surfaces to be machined of the workpiece 1, and then the workpiece 1 is secured. With the repetition of the above- mentioned steps all surfaces of the polygon mirror are machined one by one.
