PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a cleaning device, to stabilize a cleaning roller and to make the device resist along the use by forming spiral ruggedness on the cleaning roller. CONSTITUTION:An elastic cleaning roller 4 consisting of silicon rubber is arranged on the upstream side of a cleaning blade 3 about the traveling direction of a photosensitive body and the roller 4 slides on the surface of the photosensitive body with a proper relative speed to remove foreign substances from the surface of the photosensitive body. The cleaning roller 4 consists of a sponge- like inner layer 4b and a solid outer layer 4a made of silicon rubber. In addition, spiral grooves 5 are formed on the surface of the cleaning roller 4 over the whole length.
