PURPOSE:To prevent data from the reduction of reliability due to the defect of a position error signal by registering defect information in a data track by regarding that a defect exists on the same position as the defect position of the position error signal on all data tracks included in a cylinder having the defect positional error signal and executing defect skip operation at the reading/writing of data. CONSTITUTION:When a distance of a defect 2 included in a position error signal 1 from an index 3 is (l), the value of (l) is registered in the defect information of a home address (HA) 5 of a data track 4 included in a cylinder having the defective positional error signal by regarding that the defect exists on the distance of (l) from the index 3. When data are written in the data track 4 by the defect skip operation, a data part in a record Rn separated from the index 3 by the distance (l) are divided into data (D1) 7 and data (D2) 9, a gap (G) 8 is written on the part corresponding to the defect, and at the reading of the data, the data (D1) 7, (D1) 9 are dividedly read out.
