PURPOSE:To test the rotation of a tracking ball of a pointing device and to test a rotation detecting mechanism by generating sound only when the tracking ball of the pointing device is rotated. CONSTITUTION:When an operator shifts a pointing device on a plane such as a table, etc., a tracking ball 1 is rotated by friction with the plane, and rotation of the tracking ball 1 is converted to digital signals 100, 101 by X- direction and Y-direction rotation detecting mechanisms 2, 3. Moving distance converting circuits 5a, 5b count the number of times of generation of digital signals 100, 101 in a fixed time, and thereby converts to the distance of movement and outputs to an information processing device 8. A rotation detecting circuit 6 watches the digital signals 100, 101 at a fixed period and if at least one of digital signals 100, 101 is a high level signal, outputs a digital signal 102 of high level, and when both are low level outputs the signal of low level. When the digital signal 102 is high level, a D/A converting circuit converts the signal to analog signals 103 by which sound can be generated from a speaker 4.
