PURPOSE:To obtain an electrode wire containing a specific weight ratio of zinc and the remainder of copper and inevitable impurities, which has a high electric discharge machining speed and is antistickingable, by gradually decreasing the concentration of zinc from the outer surface to the center of the electrode wire. CONSTITUTION:An electrode wire is made of a commercially available alloy consisting of 30-40% of Zn and the remainder of Cu and inevitable impurities, having the concentration of Zn which is gradually decreased from the outer peripheral surface to the center of the electrode wire, that is, having the maximum concentration at the outer peripheral surface thereof. Further, the Zn exists mainly in the form of ZnO, and the ratio between the concentrations of Zn and Zno at a depth of at least 100Angstrom from the outer peripheral surface is more than 1. Further, the following processes is taken for embodying the above-mentioned electrode wire, that is, an electrode wire containing 30-40% of Zn and the remainder of C and inevitable impurities is heated up to a temperature of 450-850 deg.C in the atmosphere of slight oxidation, but thereafter, is not picked. Further, the gas mixture of a gas which does not react with Cu but oxidizes Zn and nonoxidized gas is used as for the slight oxidation atmosphere.
