PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in color reproducibility or to prevent signals of dark parts from not appearing by arranging an N-type drain layer arranged on a P-type Si substrate and an overflow control electrode for controlling a surface potential of the substrate between said drain layer and an N-type layer. CONSTITUTION:A drain N<++> layer 13 which is adjacent to an N<+> layer 5 and is used as an overflow drain and an overflow control electrode 14 for controlling a surface potential of a substrate 1 between said layers 13 and 5 are arranged. During a storage duration subsequent to a signal read-out duration, a transparent electrode 7 is kept at higher level than the surface potential of the layer 5 for an arbitrary duration. Then, it is kept at lower level voltage for storing the next signal charge. In the initial period of that, the potential of the electrode 14 is changed into that of high level and the potential of the layer 3 is changed into that of low level, thereby implanting the charges into the layer 5 from the layer 13 so as to determine a surface potential of the layer 5. Thus, a voltage which leaves the signal charges in the layer 5 is applied and nextly an insufficient quantity of charges is implanted from the layer 13, thereby preventing the phenomenon that the signals of dark parts of an object do not appear as outputs.
